DIY Safety Disclaimer
Last updated October 8, 2026
DRAFT — not legal advice; Derek to review (consider an attorney).
Please read this before you build anything from a Layton Farms plan.
Our DIY plans, like the Cedar Compost Bin and the Kids Treehouse Plan, show how we built these projects on our own place, with our tools, our materials and our ground. Your situation will be different. These plans are a guide, not a guarantee.
You’re the builder
By building from our plans, you agree that you’re responsible for:
- Your safety and the safety of anyone helping you
- Checking local building codes, zoning, permits and HOA rules before you start
- Calling 811 (or your local utility locator) before digging
- Choosing sound materials and hardware rated for outdoor use
- Judging whether the project fits your skill level, site, soil and trees
- Inspecting and maintaining what you build over time
If you’re unsure about any step, stop and consult a licensed contractor or structural engineer.
Basic safety, every time
- Wear eye protection, hearing protection and gloves when cutting or fastening. Wear sturdy footwear too, and steel-toe boots for bigger builds.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for every power tool.
- Cut hardware cloth and wire edges are sharp, so file or fold them over.
- Keep track of fasteners, and sweep the area with a magnet when you’re done.
- Keep children and pets away from the work area during construction.
Structures children use
Play structures like our tree fort carry real risk of falls and injury.
- Adults must supervise children at all times during construction and play.
- Never let children on the structure while it’s being built.
- Before anyone plays, load-test the platform and test every climbing hold, ladder and rail under adult weight.
- Follow the height, spacing and load guidance in the plan, and inspect the structure at least once a year and after major storms.
- Never damage or girdle a living tree.
Planners and trackers
Our printables are for organizing only. The canning planner isn’t a substitute for tested recipes and current USDA home-canning guidance. The egg and flock tracker isn’t veterinary advice. The expense tracker isn’t tax, legal or accounting advice.
No warranty
Plans are provided “as is,” without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent the law allows, Layton Farms and Derek Layton aren’t liable for injury, death, property damage or other loss resulting from using our plans or building any project. Climbing and elevated play carry inherent risks.
